In Austin most seasons can feel like summer, but nothing beats the prime months of June through August with something for everyone through a variety of outdoor activities. Whether you live in the area or are visiting from out of town, the following activities are some of the most fun things to in Austin Texas this summer. 

1. Visit the iconic South Congress “bat” bridge

Watch the bats appear right before sunset in the summer. The Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge is in the center of downtown Austin and is the home to the largest urban bat colony in the world with around 1.5 million bats.

2. Catch the Zilker Summer Musical

This summer’s musical is Disney’s broadway smash hit – Newsies. You can see the talented cast from Thursday to Sunday in July and August at Zilker Hillside.

3. Shop Austin’s finest local products

Get fresh sourced goods and artisan crafts from locals of Austin at a farmers market. There are quite a few in the area. However, you should definitely look into visiting the farmer’s markets that the Sustainable Food Center organizes where everything sold is 100% local. There is one in Downtown Austin at the Republic Square. 422 Guadalupe St 78701 and another takes place at the Toney Burger Center, 3200 Jones Road, 78745. Both on Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

4. Visit “Austin’s most loved park” – Zilker Metropolitan.

In the heart of Austin, this 351 acre park features a natural swimming pool, a garden, paddle boarding, and the perfect view for a picnic. Take a dip in Barton Springs, which stays around a cool 67 degrees. Not in the mood to swim? There are fun things to do Austin, Texas with many special events and festivals taking place at Zilker throughout the season. 

5. Keep cool on a hot day and hit the water.

Go kayaking, paddle boarding, or boating on Lake Austin or Lake Travis. Visit Waterloo Adventures, a special waterpark located on Lake Travis. From water trampolines to floating picnic tables, the activities are endless. 

6. See Austin FC play

Austin FC is the first professional sports team in the city. Watch a soccer game at the stadium in north Austin. Games take place May through October so you have plenty of opportunities to visit the Q2 stadium which is home to many murals made by local artists. 

7. Discover beautiful scenic trails 

Explore waterfalls and beautiful views at the Greenbelt with 12 miles of well maintained trails. There are several access points through the city for you to hike, bike, rock-climb, swim, or hang out along this south Austin trail. 

8. Fish in your own private oasis

Cast a line at Moby Dick’s Private Pond Fishing. Catch trophy size largemouth bass, blue cats, bluegill, and black crappie in the private fully-stocked catch and release pond. No fishing license required with gear rentals available. Whether you are looking for a day trip with a guided fishing experience or a relaxing weekend getaway in exclusive lodging.

These are just some of the all summer long activities that you can do this season. No matter what day it is, there is always something going on, whether it is a pop-up market or live music. There are plenty of reasons to spend some time in the southern sunshine. Drive around to see the Texas bluebonnets and grab a bite at a food truck for the full experience.
